Pathways for Doctors who want to work as an Overseas Doctor in the UK
Pathway 1
This pathway is ideal for MBBS graduates those who have completed/ in process of completing their internship/house job.
Please note that — Unlike the USMLE, you cannot appear for PLAB exams before completing your medical college.
Step 1: IELTS
Clear your IELTS in the beginning of internship

Step 2: PLAB 1
Pass PLAB 1 during the duration of your internship.

Step 3: PLAB 2
Pass your PLAB 2 as soon as you can after you pass your PLAB 1.

Step 4: GMC registration

Step 5: CREST Form
Work in your non training job and get the CREST form signed. CREST form is a document which confirms that you have the competencies similar to a U.K. trainee completing their foundation training.

This pathway is for doctors those who have passed royal college membership exams ( MRCP , MRCS, MRCOG etc. )
Step 1 : Pass the desired Royal college’s membership exam
Step 2: Apply for GMC registration and find a non-training job
You can find junior level or registrar level (if you are experienced ) jobs through :

Step 3: Work in your non training job and get the CREST form signed
CREST form is a document which confirms that you have the competencies similar to a U.K. trainee completing their foundation training.

Please note : If you have worked in a surgical post for the duration of 18 months in any country including the U.K., you cannot apply for Core Surgical Training. You will have to apply for ST3 level specialty training jobs for further training after getting the form for core surgical training competencies signed off .
Also note that : If you do not want to get into a training post at a junior level (CT/ST1)(do not want to repeat core training as you have already done that in your home country as MS or MD), you can start as a non-training registrar(a senior post ) and work up your way towards becoming a consultant via the CESR pathway.
Pathway 3 (MTI Pathway)
This pathway is for doctors who have completed post graduate training in their home country and want to work in the U.K. for a limited time, later on deciding whether they want to continue further or not.

Visa requirements to work as an Overseas Doctor in the UK
Visa requirement
UK employers can employ non-UK and non-EU professionals such as doctors to fill vacancies which they cannot fill with UK and EU nationals. So, Non-UK and non-EU doctors need to apply for Tier 2 (General Visa) to work in the UK. After getting the Tier 2 visa they can practice as a doctor in the UK. Those who have ILR status in the UK don’t need to apply for any visa.
You need to meet the below conditions to be eligible to apply for a Tier 2 visa:
- You must have a job offer from a UK employer.
- You must be offered an appropriate salary.
- The job offer made to you must meet the Resident Market Labor Test (RLMT) unless there are some exemptions available to it.
- Your employer must be a licensed Tier 2 sponsor in the UK who then must offer you a certificate of sponsorship.
- You must have personal savings to support yourself when you arrive in the UK.
- You must meet the English language requirement.

Getting registered as a doctor in Australia
Doctors aiming to register and work unsupervised as a specialist in Australia must have completed the required training and assessment to gain fellowship with the appropriate Australasian college in their chosen specialty (ie: radiology, emergency medicine, general medicine, psychiatry). If you have trained in Australia or New Zealand the process is straightforward.
English language and training requirements

HOW TO WORK AS AN OVERSEAS DOCTOR IN THE UK
To work as a doctor in the United Kingdom
To work as a doctor in the United Kingdom, all doctors must obtain registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and licence to practice. The exact requirements for registration will depend on several factors, like nationality, the country of your primary medical qualification and any postgraduate training.
As a rough guideline
- A valid and verified primary medical qualification: Not sure whether your qualification is valid? Double check on General Medical Council website. An EEA country or Switzerland or non-EEA. It may require independent verification (via EPIC verification).
- English Language skills: speaking, reading, writing and listening ability must be demonstrated. This is to ensure your patients’ wellbeing is not at risk. This can be demonstrated by passing IELTS/OETS (International English Language Testing System/Occupational English Test) Academic 7.5 or above or Medicine grade B
- Proof of Clinical Knowledge: PLAB, Postgraduate qualification, Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) PLAB1 exam – This tests your medical ability. The PLAB1 is a 180 multiple choice paper involving clinical scenarios, which you are given 3 hours to complete. For more information about the PLAB1 and booking it, click here.
- PLAB2 exam: This is the 2nd part of the PLAB exams, and involves (with the requirement of a UK Visa) coming to the UK to sit. It is an in-person exam, and you are tested on your clinical skills. - GMC Registration: Once you’ve passed your PLAB2, you can apply for a GMC license to practice in the UK.
- Evidence of Acceptable Internship: or two years of continuous work practice evidence after graduation
- 5-year activity record: medical work, clinical attachments, periods of unemployment or study leave
- Certificate of good standing: You will need to provide a certificate of good standing from each medical regulatory authority you’ve been registered or licensed with in the last five years. Each certificate is only valid for 3 months
- ID Check: Once your application has been approved, you will be invited to book an identity check within 6 months. This takes place in either Manchester or London. Guidelines on the identity checking process can change at any time due to Covid-19, please visit the GMC for the latest guidelines.
- Finding & Applying for a UK: On average, from completing your PLAB2 to getting a , it can take 2 months.
If you’re not a consultant and looking to work in the UK, we recommend applying first for a non-training role in at your grade (FY2, SHO or Registrar depending on your seniority) before entering a training programme.
