Overview

Has a reputation for academic excellence, quality teaching and innovative research, ensuring that you gain valuable knowledge and specialist skills which are current, relevant, marketable and responsive to community health care needs now and in the future.

Program

Throughout the Master of Nursing, you will learn from leading experts through hands-on learning as you develop a strong theoretical understanding of health and illness, and how care is provided and experienced. As part of your degree, you will complete more than 800 clinical placement hours in varied settings including emergency departments, intensive care units, paediatric units, oncology units, mental health facilities and community health centres. Beyond clinical care, you will also study human biology, pharmacology, research and evidence-based practice, social contexts of health and illness, illness experiences, healthcare systems, leadership in healthcare and other professional topics, including legal and ethical issues in healthcare.

In Semester 1 of the first year, you will undertake study in clinical nursing subjects together with subjects that explore the social context of nursing and the global and Australian health system more generally. During Semester 2, the focus is on more specific clinical areas such as mental health and acute care nursing as well as illness experiences and drug therapies.

The second year of the course further considers the political aspects of the healthcare system and more detailed nursing practice in the areas of research in nursing practice, professional practice and the emerging role of nurses as global citizens, community nursing, mental health and acute/high dependency nursing. During this year, there is also an option to extend knowledge and practice in paediatrics, mental health, high acuity or clinical nursing.

Admission Requirements

1. Completed bachelor’s degree
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in a discipline other than nursing in order to apply.

Applicants who successfully meet the admission criteria will receive a conditional offer and an invitation to undertake literacy and numeracy testing. An interview will then be scheduled based on those results. Literacy and numeracy tests for international students are undertaken online and interviews are held via Skype.

2. Literacy/Numeracy Tests
The numeracy test will assess fundamental mathematical ability and will consist of 15 questions addressing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages and units of measurement. Calculators will be permitted; however, no mobile devices are to be used. Applicants are given 15 minutes to complete the numeracy test.

The literacy test will consist of a short reading and writing a brief critical appraisal. Applicants are given 20 minutes to complete the literacy test. The aim of the literacy test is to provide applicants with the opportunity to demonstrate their comprehension of written English, and writing skills including spelling, punctuation and grammar. The ability to critically analyse and think independently will also be assessed.

Those who successful pass both the online literacy and numeracy testing will be invited to an interview.

This process takes approximately 45 minutes, including 30 minutes for the group task and 15 minutes for reflection. Interviews will be held via Skype and will take approximately 45 minutes.

Interviews are used as a valuable screening tool to enable Sydney Nursing School to offer places to applicants who not those only present well on paper but who can also demonstrate they have the required level of communication skills, motivation, attitude and insight necessary to succeed in nursing.
