The University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Nursing
Overview
The University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Nursing is a respected and innovative program developed in consultation with healthcare professionals. It takes a narrative and inquiry-based approach to learning and integrates lecture-based study with clinical placements in major hospitals.
UQ partners with several hospitals in South East Queensland including the Mater Hospitals (South Brisbane, Springfield and Redland), Ipswich Hospital, Logan Hospital, Redland Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital, and aged-care nursing homes.
Program
As a UQ nursing student, you will consolidate your skills and develop your confidence through extended specialist clinical placements in your final year, in areas such as aged care, critical care, emergency medicine, mental health, rural health, and paediatrics.
You will undertake more than 1,000 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of health care organizations. You will have the opportunity during your placements to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real-life settings.
You will commence your clinical placements in the first semester of the program. Over the first two years of the program, you will normally complete 15 eight-hour shifts per semester, and in the final year, you will complete extended full-time clinical placements.
A dedicated team will help you arrange your placement. In addition to your placement hospitals, you can expect to undertake your studies at the St Lucia campus, the Francis Baron Burnett Simulation Centre and Greenslopes Hospital, or the Mater Hospital at South Brisbane.
